FAQ
The choice is yours! But it all depends on the mood you want to create and how you want to use your terrace. Table lamps are ideal for cosy, relaxing moments. If you want to define the contours of your terrace, choose LED bollards or recessed spotlights. Finally, for functional lighting, wall-mounted LED sconces and floor lamps offer just the right amount of light.
For a 20 m² terrace, the recommended LED wattage depends on the desired ambience and the use of the space (dining, relaxation, decoration). At Lumihome, we advise you to aim for a total luminous intensity of around 150 to 300 lumens per square meter. This corresponds to a total LED output of 3000 to 6000 lumens for a terrace of this size.
Here is an indicative breakdown:
- Main lighting (dining, activity): Choose a central light source, such as a floor lamp, wall light or Lumihome terminal, with a wattage of 1000 to 2000 lumens.
- Ambient lighting: Use solar lamps (spotlights, solar table lamps, etc.) to provide a soft light of around 500 lumens.
- Functional lighting (paths, deck edges): Install recessed spotlights to add around 150 to 300 lumens per light point.
There's really no recommended intensity for patio lighting. The trick is to find the perfect balance between effective light and pleasant, non-blinding brightness. You need to be able to make out all the obstacles on your terrace, without ever being disturbed by too much glare. Let's say that to create a soft, intimate atmosphere, you should opt for 200 to 300 lumen fixtures. For more functional lighting, you can choose LED fixtures offering between 500 and 1,000 lumens. Once again, it all depends on how your terrace will be used.
Light color (or color temperature) is expressed in Kelvin. Since patio lighting must be comfortable, we recommend warm white light, between 2,700 and 3,000 Kelvin. But it all really depends on your needs:
- Warm white (2700 to 3000 k) is ideal for creating a warm atmosphere. It's perfect for relaxing evenings or al fresco dining.
- Neutral white (3,500 to 4,100k) is recommended if you're looking for lighting that offers comfort and visibility.
- Cool white (5,000 to 6,500 k), which is closer to daylight, is intended for functional spaces, such as outdoor kitchens. However, this color can appear colder and more clinical, and therefore less user-friendly.
This depends on a number of factors, such as the size of the terrace, the desired lighting effect and the power of the spotlights. However, here are a few recommendations for harmonious lighting:
- As a general rule, we recommend a spacing of 1.5 to 2 meters between each LED spot.
- If your terrace is rather small (approx. 10m2), a spacing of 1 to 1.5 metres will be sufficient.
- Above 10m2, 2-meter spacing is more appropriate.
- Finally, if you want to highlight specific elements of your terrace, you can reduce the spacing around them to accentuate their lighting.
